Signal Peak Foundation

To provide hope and create possibility and purpose for children, adults and the elderly by educating those we serve, enriching the lives of citizens with programs and activities and strengthening families in our common community, from San Carlos through Globe to Miami. In all of this Signal Peak will serve humbly and with hospitality as the heart of the community for generations to come.

The following message from Russ Fetterman was sent February 27, 2008 at 6:01 p.m.. Good evening,

Carmen Casillas, Alexis Rivera, Marty Feldhake, Joe Bracamonte and I met this afternoon and brain stormed regarding collaboration with recreation programs and community events.  We plan on meeting next Wednesday @ 1PM at AZYP to put together the calendar with all of the sports programs in the area for the rest of the year so we can verify no conflicts and work towards filling in the blanks with other activities and programs for a community wide calendar.

The following tasks were agreed to:
  1. Marty will contact Tim Horta and obtain a baseball calendar for the area and explain what we wish to accomplish; Tim will be asked to attend next meeting if available.
  2. Marty will bring basketball schedule and past years summer schedule to work with for this years schedule.
  3. Russ will contact Jeff Shank and obtain a AYSO soccer calendar for the area and explain what we wish to accomplish; Jeff will be asked to attend if available.
  4. Russ will ask Carolyn to look into Prop 202 funding and see what is needed to apply for this and also check into other grants available for youth recreation programs.  Carolyn will be asked to attend the next meeting to assist on grant exploration.
  5. Carmen will ask Cat to attend the next meeting to assist in coordination.
  6. Carmen will talk to Manoj to ask about drafting MOU for summer recreation funds for summer recreation programs for seed money for programs.
  7. Russ will obtain calendar to use as master calendar for coordination of sports programs in the area.
We decided to approach this in the following manner.
  • We will put together the community calendar with what we know we have now and then fill in the blanks.
  • When we get a total program, we will look at finding community assistance with program supervision for events.
  • In addition to searching for grants and additional funding for the programs, we will try to find assistance for program supervision by asking ideas and assistance from Tanya with WIA; Mike Guadiana of DES job employment programs; Alexis Rivera for possible assistance through work study programs at the college.
  • When Signal Peak obtains a final lease for the MAC, further assistance will be available with funds which will allow employment and assistance of the director to coordinate the community calendar and events and sign up for the local community recreation events.
Carmen will contact Cindy Fletcher to ask to attend the next meeting for coordination with March 22nd Easter Egg hunt and we will work on assisting Marty with volunteers for that event.

We also discussed coordination of several other events for the calendar including;
  • A movie night at BP and other venues in the area
  • Fitness program - weights, yoga, etc
  • Possible Cruise night
  • Cinco de Mayo
  • July 4th
  • Community Unity
  • Pool items including water aerobics, swim lessons, water volleyball
  • Concerts in the park
  • Leadership academies for youth
  • Jazz band under the stars
  • Coordination for Diamondback trips - fuel purchases, buses from schools etc.
  • Coordination of facility use with GHS, City of Globe
Another elephant to put together but we will move forward as planned.  I am very thankful for everyone's willingness to work together and look forward to what we can all accomplish for the community with our combined efforts!

The Copper Mining Industry

Freeport-McMoRan Copper & Gold:
The word out in the street is that Freeport-McMoRan and local participants are in the planning stages of constructing a skate boarding arena presumably in or around the Pinal Mountain Little League field in Claypool Arizona.

Resolution Copper Mining in Superior Arizona:
Resolution is apparently experiencing another set back in the land exchange issue. I asked a friend there for some information that might help shed light on some of the issues.

1.             The Resolution land exchange is one of the things that area Republicans and Democrats can agree on. Miami, Globe, Superior, Mammoth, Kearny have been joined by both Gila and Pinal counties in the passage of support resolutions. CAAG (the Central Arizona Association of Governments) has also passed a resolution of support.
2.             Resolution is one of the biggest economic development projects in Arizona.  When operating, Resolution will provide around 1,200 jobs paying an average of 70k per year.
3.             Resolution will train local residents on modern skills needed to work in a high-tech mine. These are skills that can be taken anywhere in the world.
4.             Resolution will generate around $4 billion in revenue to the State and another $5 billion to the federal government.
5.             Unlike other companies bringing this many jobs into our economy, Resolution is not asking for any incentives from State and local governments.
6.             Resolution has voluntarily entered into, ahead of requirements, a
7.             The Resolution ore body is one of the largest in the world – anticipated to meet 20% of the United States’ demand for copper.
8.             As a result of the slow progress on the land exchange, operations have begun to slowdown. The company has no other choice other than to scale back. This is already starting with the shaft development team (about 10% of our workforce). While folks with a mining background can find work elsewhere in the world, the three to four jobs each that they support (school teachers, restaurant owners, auto mechanics, etc.) are already being affected. For example, with every ten students enrolled at Superior Junior/ Senior High School, Principal Hatch gets around $100k. That could fu 50 million dollar environmental cleanup of the Superior site of Magma Copper Co, a 100-year old site of mining, concentration and smelting.
9.             Resolution will use a former pit mine for tailing deposition and will reclaim the area.
10.          Resolution has contracted with the Arizona Department of Commerce to help diversify the economy of the region – so that there won’t be a dependency on mining.
